MSA partnered with Contrack Watts and WSDOT on the BI Ferry Overhead Walkway replacement to provide Marine Mammal Monitoring (MMM) and Marbled Murrelet Monitoring (MaMu) during impact and vibratory installation of piles for the new walkway. The plan was designed to detect ESA-listed marine mammals (i.e. humpback whales and southern resident killer whales (SRKW) and shut down pile driving before they entered a zone where they would experience behavioral impacts from the noise. MSA biologists also used WDFW Forage Fish Survey protocols to detect forage fish spawning events that were occurring on the adjacent beach to assist in determining construction work windows.
